A 3-day wild road trip through Mackay Isaac
Salt air, rainforest mist, rock pools, waterfalls and wide open coastlines – this is a three-day nature loop designed for travellers who like their IRL adventures.
Day 1: Coastal calm
Cape Hillsborough
Start where the rainforest meets the sea at Cape Hillsborough National Park. Check in to Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park and settle into coastal mode. This is the kind of place where you park the car and forget about it for a while. Spend the day wandering to Beachcomber Cove – recently named Australia’s 3rd Best Beach in 2026, and exploring the rock pools that line the headlands. Clear water, volcanic rock formations and the kind of coastline that feels untouched.
Early night recommended. Because tomorrow starts before sunrise.
Day 2: Sunrise wildlife
Wake while the sky is still pink and head down to Casuarina Beach for the wallabies on the sand experience. Eastern grey kangaroos and agile wallabies wander the shoreline as the tide shifts – one of those quietly iconic Mackay Isaac moments that never feels ordinary.
Slow morning. Coffee. One last look at the water.
Then it’s time to head inland with Mackay Adventure Tours.

Day 3 – High clearance, no shortcuts
Cape Palmerston National Park
Today is for the wild ones.
Head south toward Cape Palmerston National Park. This is where the bitumen ends and the real adventure begins. FYI this is high-clearance 4WD country.
Soft sand, tidal beaches, rocky headlands and the towering presence of Mount Funnel to set the tone. Spend the day beach driving (tide aware), fishing, scrambling up the headland for views toward the Northumberland Islands or simply soaking up the scale of it all.
It’s rugged. It’s raw. It’s spectacular.
And after three days, you’ll have moved from sunrise wallabies to rainforest waterfalls to windswept coastal wilderness – without ever rushing it.

Leave space in the plan. Nature here doesn’t run to tight schedules. Stay longer if the water’s perfect. Detour if the light looks good. Take the longer road if it feels right.
