In Mackay Isaac, the best trips tend to unfold naturally. A splash here, a road trip there, something unexpected in between. This four-day family-friendly itinerary is designed to give you structure without locking you in, so you can slow down, switch plans on the fly and enjoy the ride.
Day 1: Mackay easy does it
Water play, waterfront wandering and settling in
Kick things off gently in Mackay with a stop at the Bluewater Lagoon. It’s central, free and always a hit with kids of all ages. Shaded areas, slides and multiple pools make it an easy win after a travel day.
Once everyone’s dried off, grab the scooters or bikes and wander along the Mackay Marina Boardwalk. Let the kids lead the way, stop for snacks when you feel like it, and watch boats drift in and out.

Day 2: Finch Hatton & Eungella adventures
Bikes, rainforest and choose-your-own fun
Today’s all about fresh air and options. Head west to Finch Hatton and kick things off at the Finch Hatton MTB Trails. Hire bikes locally and let the kids loose on the pump track, or tackle sections of the trail network as a family.
From here, the day can go a couple of ways. Cool off with a swim at Finch Hatton Gorge, or continue up into Eungella National Park for a slower-paced afternoon. Platypus spotting at Broken River is a real highlight, especially in the late afternoon.
If hunger strikes, the Eungella Chalet is an easy lunch stop with sweeping valley views and space for kids to roam.
Spend the night surrounded by nature at Flametrees Stays back in Finch Hatton, where the rainforest setting makes bedtime feel like part of the adventure.
Day 3: Clermont and outback curiosity
Gold fever, big landscapes and country nights
Hit the road west and swap rainforest for wide-open country. In Clermont, families can get hands-on with a Golden Prospecting Tours experience. Kids love the thrill of digging and sifting, with parents joining in in the hope of striking gold.
Later in the day, explore the region’s dramatic landscapes, with views toward Wolfang Peak and nearby lookouts offering space to stretch legs and soak it all in.
Stay overnight at Clermont Caravan Park, where simple comforts, open space and a relaxed country atmosphere round out the day nicely.
Day 4: Country pubs and one last thrill
The long way back, with a splashy finish
On the journey back toward Mackay, stop in at the Nebo Hotel for lunch. It’s the kind of classic country pub that suits families perfectly. No rush, no fuss, just good food and a friendly welcome.
Back in Mackay, finish strong with a jet boat ride on the Pioneer River with Purple Thunder Mackay. Fast spins, splashy turns and plenty of laughs make it a memorable way to wrap up the trip, especially for families with older kids who love a bit of adrenaline.
