Far From Winter Vibes

The “it’s too nice to stay inside” day trip

This is the kind of day you plan loosely. Wake up, check the weather (it’ll be good), grab a coffee and head wherever feels right.

We’ve mapped out one perfect warm-weather day, plus a few swap options if your mood changes along the way.

7:00am: Coffee + sunrise views

Start coastal. Always start coastal.

Starting in Mackay, grab takeaway coffee (Primal Coffee Roasters is our tip for a strong brew) and drive out to Lamberts Beach Lookout via Slade Point. It’s quiet early, the air is warm and the sunrise over the ocean feels like a proper “we escaped winter” moment.

No rush here. Sit on the grass, watch the light roll in and ease into the day.

Swap option: Not an early riser? Skip sunrise and start the day at Harbour Beach instead. Grab a coffee nearby and wander the sand once the morning warms up.

9:00am: Slow coastal wander

Once the day’s warmed up, jump back in the car and head north toward Seaforth. The drive is half the experience, windows down, ocean popping up beside the road, tiny beach towns along the way.

Spend a couple of hours at Seaforth Beach. Swim, walk the shoreline or sit under a tree and do absolutely nothing for a bit.

If you’re feeling hungry, lunch at Seaforth Pitt Stop Classic Cafe is an easy win.

Swap option: Short on time? Head to Eimeo Beach instead. It’s closer to Mackay, it’s patrolled and is perfect for a relaxed swim and beach stroll.

12:30pm: Scenic drive inland

Time to swap salt air for rainforest.

Head west toward Pioneer Valley. This drive is made for open windows and playlists. You’ll pass cane fields, mountains and little roadside stops that make you want to pull over every five minutes.

Keep an eye out for small creek crossings along the way. Locals stop here for quick dips all the time. If you see a safe spot that looks inviting, stop. That’s the whole point of this day.

2:00pm: Swim stop at Finch Hatton Gorge

Arrive at Finch Hatton Gorge mid-afternoon when the air is warm and the water feels perfect.

Walk the short track to Araluen Cascades, jump in for a swim, then lie on the rocks and let time disappear for a while.

Finch Hatton

4:30pm: Wind your way up to Eungella

Keep driving up the winding road to Eungella. The temperature drops just enough to feel refreshing, the views open up and the afternoon light hits the valley perfectly.

Now’s the time to settle in for an early dinner or late lunch at the Eungella Chalet Hotel. Grab a table overlooking the Pioneer Valley and enjoy a chicken parmi with one of the best views in the region. No soup entrée needed to warm up.

6:00pm: Platypus and golden hour

Before heading back down the mountain, stop at Broken River for platypus spotting.

Early evening is prime time. It’s quiet, peaceful and one of those experiences that feels surprisingly magical.

7:30pm: Steak and a nightcap

Head back toward Mackay and finish the day at Moss on Wood. If you’re still hungry, this is the spot. Grab a pizza, and enjoy a nice glass of wine, a fruity cocktail or a cold beer.

You’ll still be in a T-shirt. Still talking about the day. Still very far from winter.

The Free Spirit way

One day. Beaches, rainforest, swims and a great meal at the end.
And the best part? You didn’t need a jacket once.

Winter who?
