Our 3-Day Hinterland to Coast Itinerary
Starting inland and drifting toward the coast is one of the best ways to experience the Mackay Isaac region. The change is gradual but powerful. Wide horizons soften into green hills, freshwater replaces dust, and before you know it, you’re back by the sea.
This three-day drive begins out west in Clermont and works its way east to the coast. It’s designed to be taken slowly, with room for detours, long stops and last-minute changes. There’s no perfect order here. Just follow the road and see how the landscape shifts.
Day 1: Clermont and gold country
Outback stories, big views and starry skies
Begin your journey in Clermont, where the pace is slower and the landscape stretches wide in every direction. Start the day with a hands-on experience with Golden Prospecting Tours Clermont, learning how to read the land and try your luck on private property and working gold mines. It’s an immersive way to connect with the town’s past and present.
If you’re keen to take it in, Lords Table Mountain is a striking sight across the open landscape. Stop by one of the surrounding spots to take in the view. Time it for later in the day if you can, when the light softens and the landscape really comes alive.
As night falls, settle in around Clermont or nearby Dysart and take a moment to look up. With minimal light pollution, the stars take centre stage. On a clear night, the Milky Way feels close enough to touch.

Day 2: Freshwater and rainforest air

As you head east, the scenery begins to change. Red dirt gives way to deeper greens and cooler air as you make your way toward Eungella, via Nebo.
Start the day at Eungella National Park. Wander the walking tracks, take in the views across the Pioneer Valley and keep an eye out for wildlife along the way. A stop at Broken River offers one of the best chances to spot platypus in the wild.
Then continue down into the Valley and on to Finch Hatton Gorge, where clear freshwater pools, shaded picnic areas and short rainforest walks make it easy to slow down. Swim if the mood strikes, or simply enjoy the sound of water moving through the gorge.
Stay overnight in the hinterland and enjoy a quieter evening before the road carries you closer to the coast.

Day 3: Sea breezes and barefoot finishes

Today, the coast calls. Start early and head to Cape Hillsborough, where sunrise brings kangaroos and wallabies onto the sand. After the crowds drift away, enjoy beach walks, rockpool exploring or simply sitting with the view.
On your way back to Mackay, stop in at Eimeo Beach for a swim or a stroll along the shoreline. When it’s time to eat, head up to the Eimeo Pacific Hotel for a relaxed lunch or drink with sweeping ocean views.
Before wrapping up your journey, take an easy wander along the Bluewater Sculpture Trail. Art, water and open space come together here, making it a fitting final stop after three days of changing landscapes.
